A Game Leader serves in a hybrid role in games played at the Fundamentals level of soccer in the Long-Term Player Development model of sanctioned clubs.
We think of them as a coach that refs or a ref that coaches! 🦸🏼♀️
The objective of the Game Leader program is to allow for an improved, child-friendly approach to supervising 5v.5 games for children U7-U9 and creating more opportunities for parents to get involved. Ontario Soccer Grassroots, Referee and Coaching departments designed the Game Leader program. It is supported and endorsed by the Canadian Soccer Association.
A Game Leader will be trained to achieve a few objectives on the field:
Enable children to have a fun and rewarding experience while competing in small-sided games.
Ensure player safety.
Implement simplified rules while keeping the game moving -- limiting stoppages and assisting the young players with all restarts.
The Game Leader can be a club representative, coach, parent, or a new or senior referee selected by the club or district to participate in the Game Leader Instruction program.
You can learn about the role on the Ontario Soccer website
You can contact us via courses@norwestsocer.com concerning Game Leader training.
Game Leader training is held entirely online.
For Ontario Soccer, "Participants must be at least 12 years old." However, at NorWest Soccer, we prefer to use Game Leaders who are closer to 14 years of age.
There is a $15 fee for this course at NorWest Soccer. It can be purchased by request through courses@norwestsoccer.com and a $15 electronic transfer to the same address. Once we proceed, we will send you an access code.
If you are interested in taking the Ontario Soccer Game Leader Instruction program, follow below:
Log in or create a profile in Ontario Soccer's www.coachcentre.ca
Choose Game Leader from the menu at the top of the page.
Follow the completion instructions, entering the code when prompted.
We highly recommend you print & use the handout to take the quiz.
An 80% passing grade is required to pass.
Since we are charged for each attempt, we need to invoice you for failed attempts, too (see Step 4).
When you pass, download/screenshot your certificate with your name visible.
Only applicants who have completed Ontario Soccer or Canada Soccer certification courses will be used by our club.
We recommend students participate as Game Leaders weekly for a full season before taking the Small-sided Games course and moving up to U10-U12 games.
Game Leader Registration with NorWest Soccer needs to be completed annually for participation. We cannot assign games to unregistered referees.
